A WGN-TV Chicago employee identified as Debbie Brockman was detained on Friday, October 10, by U.S. Border Patrol agents in an incident recorded on video that has raised concern and questions about federal conduct in the city.

The event took place in broad daylight on a public street in Chicago, where Brockman — who works in the network’s creative services department — was restrained by two armed agents in front of witnesses who filmed the scene.

The arrest comes amid the controversial federal deployment in Illinois ordered by the Trump administration.

Witness Josh Thomas recorded the moment Brockman was pinned to the ground by two agents.

When asked to identify herself, she replied: “Debbie Brockman; I work for WGN.”

The agents refused to identify themselves despite questions from bystanders, while several people began confronting them verbally.

In the same video, the officers are seen placing Brockman and another detained person into a gray unmarked van.

Seconds later, as they attempted to leave, the van collided with a parked black SUV and then sped away from the scene.

Debbie Brockman Accused of Federal Assault

According to WGN-TV, citing a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Brockman — a U.S. citizen — was arrested for allegedly throwing objects at the agents’ unmarked vehicle, leading to charges of assaulting a federal officer.

So far, it remains unclear whether a prior warrant existed against her or if the agents had jurisdiction to make arrests outside an immigration context.

WGN-TV stated it is supporting its detained employee and demanding official information regarding her legal status and whereabouts.

The DHS has not released details about the second detainee or explained why the arresting unit did not display visible federal insignia — a point that has drawn criticism from civil rights advocates.

The incident comes as Chicago faces mass raids and a militarized federal presence following the deployment of 200 Texas National Guard troops to reinforce immigration operations alongside Border Patrol.

Several organizations have reported arbitrary detentions and abuse of authority in recent weeks.

What’s Next for Debbie Brockman

WGN-TV has requested official updates to determine Brockman’s legal status, while civil rights groups prepare a federal lawsuit against authorities for alleged unlawful detention and excessive use of force.

The DHS confirmed the case will be reviewed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Illinois.
